Inspiring Abidal
Eric Abidal has inspired lots of culés and football fans around the world following his surgery last year to remove a tumor on his liver, as just a couple of months later he was holding the Champions League trophy. But here it is, a true story of inspiration that has helped a young kid to survive a similar disease.
This weekend, Diario Sport wrote about the story of a boy who has liver cancer and who has been fighting to defeat this disease for a while. His father wrote a letter to Catalan newspaper La Vanguardia, where he told how our King Abi has been a true inspiration to his young son. The original can be found here.
The father said that when his son was told about his diagnosis, that it was similar to Abidal’s disease, the kid said, “Daddy, I want Abidal’s shirt. I will fight this like him and will win my own Champions.”
On January 5, just hours before the Magic Kings arrived, Barça players visited children that were in several hospitals in Barcelona. So there was the time for them to meet: Abidal was one of the three players who visited the hospital where the boy was. The scene was very emotional. The kid cried of happiness when he met his idol during such a hard time for him. “Abidal was truly affectionate, kind and gentle, he wouldn’t stop hugging my kid for ten minutes,” says the boy’s father in his letter.
In his effort to make the young boy stop crying, Abidal had nice words to cheer him up and to bring a smile to his face. He said to him: “Come on brother, I’m here to cheer you up. I am also fighting this disease and I’m setting up a foundation to help kids fighting this disease, to bring some happiness to them, maybe even give them massages!”
After comforting the child, Abi made a remarkable gesture when asked about the watch he was wearing (a Rolex of certainly very high value). Abidal just took it off and gave it to the child: “Here, I want you to have this. It has my name engraved,” said the player. Despite the insistence of the boy’s parents, there was no way to convince Abidal that the gift was not necessary. The Frenchman insisted: “I don’t care for its worth. I want the kid to be happy.”
Abi’s renewal might be happening soon, even today. There’s no way a player like him will be leaving us!

I've always said I wanted to stay in Barcelona, also after my retirement. This club is my second family." #fcblive [barça tv]
Abidal: "The best football is being played at Barça, I want to continue to make history, but we'll need to work hard to keep on winning
